This is one of the most common question that we receive from our customers and the public. Some have even wondered if this a marketing ploy to make our paper straw product stand out. Hence, this blog post :)

3-MCPD and MOAH/MOSH are mineral hydrocarbons that over a certain limit can be cancerous to humans. While research is still ongoing on the exact impact, there is still a healthy belief that they are carcinogens and Germany has set up one of the first restrictions on them.

As with all things, we prefer to err on the side of caution when it comes to the safety of our product and are always striving to be ahead of the curve. The above links point to some basic background on these organic compounds.

Can all paper straws be made this way? YES. It just requires the right raw materials, machines and production process. There is an overhead to manufacture with these restrictions in mind. Though the cost in negligible when compared to the health impact of it. In the long run, the manufacturing process that we employ to be certified free from these compounds, have made our straws not only safer but also stronger (A blog for another time!). Even if you do not use our paper straws, please ask your provider if they are aware of these safety concerns and what they are doing about it.
